Community Schools

Learning grows from the heart of the community.

Changing the course of at-risk youth.

When a school becomes the heart of its community, everyone thrives. That’s the power of Community Schools: an equity-driven approach that connects education with health, family, and local strength.

Keep improving together

Students learn better with a community

Invest in trusting relationships

Families grow stronger

Build on community strengths

Communities become more connected

Across the nation, this movement is helping students learn better, families grow stronger, and communities become healthier and more connected. We are seeing a positive impact in attendance, school climate and culture, family and community engagement, academic achievement, graduation rates, and college readiness.

We’re honored to lead Community School initiatives at Waimānalo Elementary and Intermediate School (WEIS) and Olomana School. Together, we’re nurturing a sense of belonging, pride, and purpose.

A movement of many hands.

The Coalition for Community Schools brings together people from all walks: students and kūpuna, families and teachers, community leaders and public servants. We share the belief that thriving schools grow from thriving communities.

With guidance from the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL), this network builds on three simple but powerful principles:

  • Build on community strengths

  • Invest in trusting relationships

  • Keep improving together

As part of this national movement, we are helping to plant and nurture these roots here in Hawaiʻi where education is about connection, identity, and aloha. Together, we’re growing schools that reflect the soul of its community.

The Pacific American Foundation is proud to be working with the Coalition and IEL as part of the PAF Ohana at WEIS and Olomana Schools. You can help uplift these communities by contacting Donna Okita (Olomana School) and/or Kainani Kahunanui (Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School) to get engaged.
