Aloha, and Happy Holiday Season! This month, Kapunahala Highlights PAF's Lokahi Program!

-Sam Izumi, Principal
and
-Robyn McIntosh, VP, Curriculum Coordinator and Academic Coach

In the morning, before school, Lokahi instructors provide homework support to our K-6 students. Online programs such as iReady and IXL address their differentiated instructional needs in reading and math, and we encourage students to eat a school breakfast for the energy and stamina needed to sustain their focus throughout the school day ahead!

Our 5-6 Graders participate in Physical Fitness with Lokahi instructors who support their physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being. Students participated in the Moanalua Middle School Cross Country Meet in October and were supported by their families and school staff.  At the end of the Cross Country season, the team was reorganized so the students could participate in small group Physical Fitness activities (i.e.: Basketball, Volleyball) that were designed via student voice/choice

Bee Kreative (Grade 3-4)
After homework assistance from Lokahi instructors, we have snack! Then students create a variety of seasonal arts and crafts such as pom-pom garlands, tie dye butterflies, fingerpainted bats, and leaf sprites. These engaging activities promote self-expression and social-emotional well-being.

Moove Your Mind (Grade 5-6)
Our Lokahi instructor facilitates morning yoga exercises in the morning prior to the start of the school day to support physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being.  Students learn effective stress management and mindfulness strategies.  In addition, students engage in dialogue and discussion through a book study aligned to student voice/choice to increase reading skills/proficiency.

Our Lokahi instructor implements inclusive practices within her class by providing Kindergarten Dolphins with reading and math intervention activities after school.  In addition, students are engaged in dialogue and discussions to deepen their understanding by providing teacher modeling and immediate student feedback using a variety of instructional tools and resources.

How did the restoration of a small 400-year ancient Hawaiian fishpond capture the imagination of our community?  Our new oral history archive tells the stories of how the Fishpond earned its rightful place as a living cultural resource and outdoor classroom for us all.

Walking in our ancestors footsteps helps us look across the horizon of seven generations, and offers advice for the future.  The stones have been reset. Waikalua Loko Iʻa is our “piko” or center and continues to inspire us to love (aloha ‘āina) and care (mālama ‘āina) for this precious place called home.

Or, use that potato chip bag, by turning it inside out and using the shiny side!
