Since 2009, Nature Activities for Learning and Understanding (NALU) Studies has transformed the lives of at-risk youth through a powerful blend of science, culture, and the outdoors.

Designed for students ages 13–17

NALU immerses participants in hands-on environmental science education rooted in the traditional Hawaiian ahupuaʻa (watershed) system and aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

In small cohorts, students:
  • Work in a science laboratory setting

  • Conduct college-level scientific experiments

  • Collaborate in groups on real-world research projects

  • Work alongside professionals and experts in science

  • Present findings at a formal symposium attended by scientists and community leaders

Through this unique integration of cultural knowledge and modern science, NALU builds not just achievement in the classroom, but also confidence, resilience, and belonging. These qualities empower students for life. Along their journey, they develop critical leadership qualities, a desire to help others, and a deeper connection to their communities.

Impact beyond the academics

  • Heightened responsibility and motivation to learn

  • Appreciation for the importance of education

  • Critical leadership qualities and skills

  • A desire to help others

  • Experience in service learning projects

  • Increased focus on high school and college graduation
